We\u2019ve all heard the myth: “Keep your batteries in the fridge and they\u2019ll last longer.”<\/strong> But is there any truth to it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short answer: No don\u2019t do it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While cooler temperatures can<\/em> slow battery discharge, your refrigerator isn\u2019t the right place. The best way to store batteries for a long shelf life is in a clean, dry place at room temperature<\/strong> ideally between 68\u00b0F and 78\u00b0F (20\u00b0C to 25\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s true that heat speeds up battery drain<\/strong>. Even when batteries aren’t in use they lose charge slowly through a natural process called self discharge<\/strong>. Cooler environments slow this down, which is why the fridge myth exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the catch:
Refrigerators are full of moisture<\/strong>, and that humidity can lead to condensation. If moisture seeps into your battery storage container, it can corrode the terminals<\/strong> or damage seals. This is especially dangerous for primary batteries like AA, AAA, 9V, C, and D cells<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
